The Mechanism
Write down, in a single sentence, the commitment that defines your professional life. Then apply the obsolescence filter: imagine every specific tool, platform, product, and methodology you currently use is eliminated overnight. Does your sentence survive?
The Story
Rockefeller's sentence was duty to make money, which survived the death of the kerosene lamp, the breakup of Standard Oil, and his own retirement. Ford's sentence was perfection through the Model T, which did not survive Chevrolet offering a second color. "I build the best mobile applications" does not survive the end of mobile. "I make complex systems intelligible to the people who depend on them" survives the end of any particular technology, because the commitment is to a human problem rather than a technical solution.
Application Scenarios
Career planning at any stage.
Write your defining sentence. Now test it against three extinction scenarios: your current technology becomes obsolete, your current employer ceases to exist, and your current industry is disrupted by a competitor from an adjacent field. If your sentence survives all three, you have found the right altitude. If it survives none, you have defined yourself by your tools rather than your problem. A low-altitude commitment ("I am the best iOS developer in the company") gives you a radius of approximately one technology cycle, maybe five to seven years. A mid-altitude commitment ("I build consumer software products") survives the death of iOS but not the death of consumer software as a category. A high-altitude commitment ("I make complex systems intelligible to the people who depend on them") survives the end of any particular technology, because the commitment is to a human problem rather than a technical solution. The practical implication: your altitude determines which career moves feel like natural extensions and which feel like identity betrayals. The iOS developer who pivots to AI feels like a traitor to their craft. The person who makes complex systems intelligible pivots to AI and it feels like Tuesday.
Corporate strategy.
The operators who survive multiple competitive environments are the ones whose defining sentence operates at an altitude where strategy changes feel like weather, not earthquakes. Run this test on your company's mission statement: if the specific product or technology that currently generates your revenue disappeared overnight, would your mission statement still point toward a viable business? Amazon's "Earth's most customer-centric company" survives the death of e-commerce, cloud computing, and streaming independently. Kodak's "we are in the film business" did not survive digital photography. The altitude of the defining sentence determined the radius of strategic adaptation available to each company, and the radius was fixed long before the crisis arrived.
Critical Warning
This is not "think big" or "focus on your why." The insight specific to the identity loop is that the altitude of the commitment determines the radius of adaptation. Get the altitude wrong and every strategic pivot feels like an identity crisis.
